postheadericon The Wildflower Rogaine - 12 August 2017

Plans are underway to revisit the location of the 2nd World Rogaine Championships (and only WRC hosted in WA) from the 1996 Everlasting Rogaine at Mt Singleton, 4.5 hours NE of Perth. Our setter Ann Smithson writes below...

Dreaming of Wildflowers?

This Spring, we offer you not only carpets of wildflowers, but also red soil, a Mount, a historic pastoral station by the hash house, the nearest taste of the outback to Perth, a magnificent Lake, and a reserve managed as an indigenous protected area by generations of one family.

We can promise the Wildflower rogaine will have plenty of both gentle wildflower-filled mulga country, that is a delight for everyone to cross in spring, and topography to challenge even our most competitive of rogainers.

The high point of the rogaine is over 600m, and has accessible and spectacular views.

This, our only 24 hour rogaine for 2017 and our State Championships, is well worth everyone travelling to. At around 4.5 hours drive (depending on your selection of great stops on the way), this is a weekend worth reserving in your diary!

Spend an extra day at the station exploring the spectacular scenery and wave rock formation, or instead of driving take a WARA bus (TBC ed.) to the hash house from Perth. We look forward to welcoming you!

Ann and Peter

  • Weather. Setters report (12 July) Currently about 20C during day, down to between 4 to -1C at night. Have been a few recent rainy days with drizzle, temps 18C day 11C night.
  • Ground is fairly clear of vegetation in the north-central part of the course and setters are not necessarily using gaiters. Tribulus (Double Gs) may be encountered at camp site areas, no bare feet! Ground is mainly rocky/stony with scattered vegetation and trees, sturdy boots with good ankle support and foot cushioning suggested.
  • There are many stunning views on the course.  The best viewpoints have very rewarding controls on them :-)
  • Anyone who wishes to extend their visit for a day or two should note that there are wave rock formations at Ninghan station to explore, 4WD or AWD required for the drive there.

Food

  • FOOD BEFORE THE EVENT:
  • A BBQ will be available for your use on Friday night. As usual, all entrants need to be to be self sufficient with regards to food and water before and after the event.
  • We recommend the New Norcia Hotel (pub, open 12-2, 6-8/8.30 Friday & Saturday) or Bakehouse in Bindoon (7-5) as an ideal food stopoffs en route, as the food is good and setter approved.
  • FOOD DURING THE EVENT:
  • The Hash House will operate on it's usual schedule of 5pm Saturday to 1pm Sunday. Expect the usual excellent fare from the association that was picked to run the HH for the recent World Champs in Alice Springs.

Transport and Directions

  • BUS: Update 28 July - there will be no bus option available from the event organisers (it proved too expensive). We encourage you to share the driving, and one option is to rent a minibus (we have heard of quotes around $500) and self-drive. If you would like to organise a bus feel free to send a message to This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it  and we will post your message.
  • DRIVE: Petrol availability - fill up at Wubin!! There are 2 petrol stations / roadhouses in Wubin on Great Northern Highway (270km from intersection with Roe Highway), this is last petrol before Ninghan station. Thence 109km to Ninghan station turnoff and 6km on easy 2WD accessible graded gravel road to site (caravan friendly).  Directions to be supplied to entrants will state "fill up your car with fuel in Wubin"!  Wubin roadhouses sell some typically roadhouse food and snacks, not to be relied on for a decent feed. Note excellent food at New Norcia or Bindoon as noted above.
  • Wubin petrol/roadhouse opening times:  BP (south end of town) 5am-1am, Liberty (junction north end of town) 6am-8pm.
  • Additional 24hr card only petrol availability in Dalwallinu 130km from Ninghan station turnoff.
  • No shops en route recommended - apparently Dalwallinu IGA 130km to station is open 8am-6pm but suggest buy before you go.

Services

  • Compass Hire (per person) is $5.00
  • Team changes and additions (you can remove and add team members, as long as you stay within min 2 and max 5 people per team) at rego desk, bring cash for additional entry payments.
