postheadericon Blue Moon Rogaine - 28 and 29 August 2004

After all the fanfare of the 100th and then the 101st rogaine, let’s roll up the curtain and let the action begin. The 2004 ‘MainPeak’ State Championships Rogaine will be held on the last weekend in August. The weather will be improving by then and so you have no excuse not to participate in the blue ribbon event of the year. MainPeak is sponsoring the event through the offer of prizes to certain lucky teams.

We are returning to the site of the Emu Litter Rogaine that was held in June, 1999. Sufficient time has elapsed for the photographic memories to have faded and the well formed tracks to have become overgrown. Whilst a minority of the controls occupy a similar location as before, the majority have been positioned in more challenging and scenic locations than could be imagined. The setters have heeded the advice of those that ventured before them and closed the average distance between controls to more manageable levels for the benefit and comfort of all competitors.

As an added bonus, Alcoa has granted permission for WARA to access their farmland property and this, along with the picturesque farmland adjoining the Hotham River, will provide rogainers with an opportunity to stretch their legs before the quick sprint back to hash. Be warned though that one of the controls is destined to ‘drive you to destruction’.

The 70% bush component of the event area is an absolute pleasure to traverse and should result in some fast times. There are also many tracks to make your route selection easier but extra caution will be required. You will be unlucky not to be accompanied on your travels by roaming wildlife and a variety of birds.

And the name? August, this year, has two full moons and consequently the event is being held on a blue moon (in accordance with the modern definition). Despite all WA rogaines being scheduled to coincide with a full moon, it is a very rare thing that a rogaine is scheduled to coincide with a blue moon and we felt the occasion should be recognised.

So, prepare yourselves for a weekend of challenge, fun and excitement in the 2004 ‘MainPeak’ State Championships. Get your event entries in early to avoid disappointment as places will fill rapidly.

See you under the Blue Moon.

Brian, Joe, Ron and Geoff.
