Location - where is it?

^top

The event will be held to the north west of Wandering, and to the west of Brookton. The Hash House Site will be approximately 100km from Perth, with access off the Brookton Highway. All but the last 20 kilometres leading to the Hash House Site will be on sealed roads. CLICK HERE  for more details about the Rogaine Site

WA has two main rogaining environments:

  • the coastal ranges, predominantly covered by State Forest; and
  • the wheatbelt country further inland, where pastures for grain crops and sheep are interspersed with blocks of remnant vegetation on low hills.

The coastal ranges contain a wide variety of topographical challenges, but due to the relatively high rainfall in these areas features tend to be rounded and somewhat indistinct, and many areas are covered with impenetrable bush or have been heavily logged, resulting in a lot of fallen timber and an extensive network of tracks, many of which are becoming overgrown with vegetation. The setters have opted to go for the periphery of the flatter wheatbelt country where, whilst the topography is not as vertically challenging as the coastal ranges, the features are more distinct. The map is likely comprising of 10% farmland, 90% bush, and will have a topographical range of approximately 270m ARL to 450m ARL.

The bush will be relatively open Wandoo country, with moderate undergrowth. In the farmland - cropping will have just commenced and in the uncropped paddocks there will be little grass growth.

Map:
The map will be at a scale of 1:50,000, and will have 5 metre contours. The size of the map has yet to be determined, but is expected to be slightly larger than A3. If you wish to view the style and quality of WARA maps, visit the WARA web page @ http://wa.rogaine.asn.au/results/results.htm and click on the "winners route" links.

Climate - what to expect?

^top

The town of Wandering often records the coldest temperatures in Western Australia, with nights often being less than zero des. Wandering receives about 615mm of rain per year, with over 50% of that falling within the months of June to August. One advantage is that if it is raining, it won’t get so cold!

Long term statistics for Wandering weather for June are:

Mean Minimum temperature 5.1°C
Mean Maximum temperature 16.1°C
Mean rainfall 114 mm
Number of days of rain 11.6 days (39%)

For the first 10 days of June over the past 5 years, the weather statistics have been:

  Lowest Average Highest
Mininum Temperature -3.3°C 3.3°C 12.2°C
Maximum Temperature 12.9°C 17.1°C 21.8°C
Rainfall O mm 2.3mm 17.8mm

Rain has fallen on 52% of these days, while rain > 2mm has fallen 26% of the time.

Astronomical:
The event is just prior to the full moon. The moon will be illuminated at 98%.

Sunset: 17:14 Moon rise: 15:52
End of Civil Twilight: 17:41 Moon Set: 06:39
Begin of Civil Twilight: 06:41
Sunrise: 07:08

Transport - how do i get to the site if no car?

^top

Buses will be organised to transport interstate & international competitors from the Perth Domestic Airport to the Hash House Site on Friday at 4:30pm - if there is sufficient interest a late bus will be organised for 8pm.

Please book your bus transport by 1st May 2009

Buses will return to Perth Domestic Airport on Sunday afternoon, scheduled to meet 5pm departures. The provisional timetable is:

To Event Friday 5th June 2009:

Main Shuttle       Late Shuttle* (potential)
Pickup Perth City 4:00 pm
Pickup Perth Domestic Airport 4:30 pm  8:00pm
Arrive Kelmscott* for shopping 5:00 pm

You'll need to allow 30 minutes to collect luggage etc, so we suggest not booking flights due after 3:30pm for the 4pm bus. The Domestic and International terminals are separate - allow a 15 minute taxi ride between the two.

* Kelmscott is a major shopping centre, and should be able to provide most requirements.  There is a camping store, grocery and fast food shops for any last minute or perishable purchases.

** The Late Shuttle will only run if sufficient numbers warrant it – please indicate as soon as possible (by emailing waraeditor@yahoo.com.au) if you are considering using this service.

Leave Hash House 1;30 pm
Arrive Perth Domestic Airport 4:00 pm
Arrive Perth City 4:30 pm

Perth Domestic Airport can be quite busy – do not book any flights scheduled to depart before 4:30pm

The final bus timetable will be set after 1st May – at this point all booked passengers will be requested to provide flight arrival details, and a final timetable derived to minimise waiting times.

Accommodation - where to stay or camp?

^top

Camping will be permitted at the Hash House Site on Friday and Saturday nights. We expect that most interstate competitors will stay in Perth prior to the event, rather than close to the event location. The nearest town to the Hash House Site is Brookton, 35km to the east. The Brookton Council website provides some accommodation information.

NB: There is no accommodation between the edge of suburban Perth and the Hash House Site.

Hash House Facilities

^top

The campsite will be in semi-cleared bushland, with little to no undergrowth and predominantly hard-packed sand.  There will be no allocated camping, but there will be plenty of room for everyone. The Hash House will be a standard WARA hash site, with Hash House, Administration, Rogaining Shop and First Aid tents. Portaloos will be available around the campsite, but no shower facilities. It is usual for competitors to camp with their cars.

Several marquee-style tents along with tables and chairs will be made available, particularly for the use of interstate competitors.

Meals:
Prior to the event:
There are no commercial eating places within 35 kilometers of the Hash House Site – the nearest eateries are in Brookton to the east, and suburban Perth to the west. Supplies for before or during the event should be purchased before arriving at site.

Friday evening: WARA will provide a meal at the Hash House Site on Friday evening at an additional cost and must be pre-purchased.

Saturday morning: for those pre-purchasing the "Friday Meal" Saturday breakfast will be included.

During the event:
The Hash House will commence operations at 4:00pm on Saturday, and will remain open until 1:30pm on Sunday.
