The setting and vetting team of Gary Carroll, Jim Langford, Keith Stewart
and Steve Brown have a total of 50 years of combined rogaining experience and have competed in a total of 200 events locally in WA, fourteen national (including several Top 10 places) and four international events. They have been involved in the setting or vetting of 26 events. Gary and Jim have totalled 7 years as President of WARA. The event
chairman is Warren Smith, President of WARA for 5 years and
volunteer coordinator for 13 years.
The event will be held to the north west of Wandering, and to the west of Brookton. The Hash House Site will be approximately 100km from Perth, with access off the Brookton Highway. All but the last
20 kilometres leading to the Hash House Site will be on sealed roads.CLICK HERE
for more details about the Rogaine Site
WA has two main rogaining environments:
the coastal ranges, predominantly covered by State Forest; and
the wheatbelt country further inland, where pastures for grain crops and sheep are interspersed with blocks of remnant vegetation on low hills.
The coastal ranges contain a wide variety of topographical challenges, but due to the relatively high rainfall in these areas features tend to be rounded and somewhat indistinct,
and many areas are covered with
impenetrable bush or have been heavily logged,
resulting in a lot of fallen timber and an
extensive network of tracks, many of which are
becoming overgrown with vegetation. The setters have opted to go for the periphery of the flatter wheatbelt country where, whilst the topography is not as vertically challenging as the coastal ranges, the features are more distinct. The map is likely comprising
of 10% farmland, 90% bush, and will have a topographical range of approximately 270m ARL to 450m ARL.
The bush will be relatively open Wandoo country, with moderate undergrowth.
In the farmland -
cropping will have just commenced and in the uncropped
paddocks there will be little grass growth.
Map: The map will be at a
scale of 1:50,000, and will have 5 metre contours. The
size of the map has yet to be determined, but is
expected to be slightly larger than A3.

The
town of Wandering
often records the coldest temperatures in Western
Australia, with nights often being less than zero
des. Wandering receives about 615mm of rain per
year, with over 50% of that falling within the months of
June to August. One advantage is that if it is raining,
it won’t get so cold!
Long term statistics for Wandering weather for June are:

The final bus timetable will be set
after 1st May – at this point all booked passengers
will be requested to provide flight arrival details, and a final
timetable derived to minimise waiting times.
Camping will be permitted at the Hash House Site on Friday and Saturday nights.
We expect that most interstate competitors will stay in Perth prior to the event, rather than close to the event location. The nearest town to the Hash House Site is Brookton, 35km to the east. The Brookton Council websiteprovides some accommodation
information.
NB:
There is no accommodation
between the edge of suburban Perth and the Hash House Site.
The campsite will be in
semi-cleared bushland, with little to no undergrowth and
predominantly hard-packed sand. There will be no
allocated camping, but there will be plenty of room for
everyone. The Hash House will be a standard WARA hash
site, with Hash House, Administration, Rogaining Shop
and First Aid tents. Portaloos will be available around
the campsite, but no shower facilities. It is
usual for competitors to camp with their cars.
Several marquee-style tents along with tables and chairs will be made available,
particularly for the use of interstate competitors.
Meals: Prior to the event: There are no commercial eating places within 35 kilometers of the Hash House Site – the nearest eateries are in Brookton to the east, and suburban Perth to the west. Supplies for before or during the event should be purchased before arriving at
site.
Friday evening: WARA will provide a meal at the Hash
House Site on Friday evening at an
additional cost and must be pre-purchased.
Saturday morning: for
those pre-purchasing the
"Friday Meal" Saturday breakfast will be included.
During the event: The Hash House will commence
operations at 4:00pm on Saturday, and will remain open
until 1:30pm on Sunday.
After the event:
The Hash House and other tents at the assembly area will be packed up immediately after closing operation. Anyone requiring meals after 2:00pm
Sunday will need to bring their own supplies.

Finding a Partner:
Should you be
in a situation where you like to compete but do not have a
partner, there are several options available:
Penny Dufty
runs a 'Partner Matching Service' for WARA and she can be
contacted on +618 9299 8228 or by email
pennyd@westnet.com.au
or a
discussion thread has been created on the ARA discussion
forum at rogaine.asn.au/discussion – add an entry to
the thread stating your preferred partner characteristics
(age, sex, fitness, etc)
When in Western Australia, why not
take some time out to visit some of our other attractions. The South
West region boasts a variety of attractions to satisfy everyone’s
desires. Visit the old whaling station in Albany, the
Tree-Top walk in Denmark, the tall
Karri forests at Pemberton, the caves at Augusta,
the surf at Margaret River, or the vineyards of Denmark, Mt Barker,
Margaret River, and the Swan
valley. Walk the Bibbulmun Track, nearly 1000km
from Albany to Perth www.bibbulmuntrack.org.au You could go further a field
to the Cape Le Grande National park at Esperance, the Super-Pit at Kalgoorlie,
the dolphins at Monkey Mia, the gorges at Kalbarri, Cable Beach at Broome,
or the majestic Kimberley region to see the Bungle Bungles!
Other Events The WA
Orienteering Association holds events on most Sundays
between March and September. On the weekend before the Australian
Championships is the Orienteering Autumn Classic - a 2-day
event held this year at Kenine Hill south of Williams, about 2hours
south of Perth. The weekend after the Rogaine, on 14th June is a
Standard event at Darkin River, an area off the Brookton Highway
30km east of Roleystone.
